Teaching English with Technology (July 22-24, 2013)
This intensive three-day workshop will offer hands-on opportunities for English and Language Arts educators to explore practical ways to use technology to enrich the study of literature, poetry, grammar and writing. The workshop will explore innovative ideas, effective techniques, and thoughtful plans for incorporating Web-based resources, mobile devices, and emerging technologies into the classroom instruction of English and Language Arts.
Participants will examine numerous examples of the best English-related web sites, work with innovative tools to help improve student reading and writing, develop skills with Web 2.0 tools and apps, and learn strategies to build creative, collaborative, and community minded classrooms of the 21st Century.
Key concepts to be addressed include:
- The Future of Research - teaching and using effective search strategies, the assessment of website credibility, and the documentation of online sources.
- Interacting with Digital Text - finding and using multimodal texts, leveraging audio books, and reading as well as creating eBooks.
- Digital Writing and Storytelling - blogging, collaborative writing, digital portfolios, and multimedia presentations as alternatives to traditional writing assessments.
- Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy - understanding and teaching Copyright, Creative Commons, and plagiarism as well as communication within the context of social networks such as Twitter or Facebook.
The projects, concepts, and tools addressed in this workshop not only apply to The Common Core State Standards, but also to the 4Cs - Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, & Creativity - as defined by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
Required Equipment
EdTechTeacher does not provide equipment for the workshop. Participants should bring a laptop computer with wireless capability. You are welcome to also bring iPads, tablets, or other mobile devices in addition to your laptop, but some tools may not work on all devices.
Schedule
We will begin promptly at 8:30 am and strongly recommend arriving 20-30 minutes early on the first day in order to get set up. Coffee and snacks will be available each morning. Lunch options are within walking distance.

Instructors
Tom Daccord is an educational technology speaker, instructor, and writer who has
worked with schools, districts, colleges and educational organizations in the United
States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Author of Best Ideas for Teaching with Technology: A
Practical Guide for Teachers by Teachers and The Best of History Web Sites, Tom has
presented on educational technology topics at national and international conferences,
including ISTE (U.S.), ELMLE (Europe), and ICTLT (Asia). He has produced a series of
online courses on Web 2.0 and iPad integration, as well as 21st century school leadership
and classroom assessment. A former social studies teacher who instructed in a laptop
classroom for seven years, Tom has been featured in the Boston Globe for his
contributions to teaching with technology and invited to Singapore by the Ministry of
Education as an “Outstanding Educator in Residence.” In addition to leading
EdTechTeacher, Tom currently serves as President of the National Council of Social
Studies Technology Committee and was a featured speaker at the 2010 NCSS
Conference. Tom is also an advisor to Massachusetts Computer Users in Education
(MassCUE), and the Massachusetts Association for Supervision and Curriculum
Development (MASCD), and serves as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Math) project consultant. He is the creator of Best History Web Sites, an award-winning
portal, and The Center for Teaching History with Technology, dedicated to helping K-12
history and social studies teachers effectively incorporate technology into their courses.
Tom also created Teaching English with Technology, designed to guide K-12 English
and Language Arts teachers in their use of technology in the classroom. A graduate of
Princeton University and the University of Montreal, Tom has taught in Quebec, France,
Switzerland, and the United States.
Carla Beard is a veteran English teacher and educational technology specialist for the state of Indiana who has presented at conventions and workshops nationally. Carla is creator and webmaster of the award-winning Web English Teacher, a popular web portal that presents the best of K-12 English/Language Arts teaching resources: lesson plans, WebQuests, videos, biographies, e-texts, criticism, classroom activities and more. She has written and presented extensively on technology in the English/Language Arts curriculum, including a National Council of Teachers of English presentation entitled "Technology and English/Language Arts." In 2004, Carla was named to the Educator Advisory Board of AOL@School, and she has served as National Teacher Advisor for Cable in the Classroom. Carla has also evaluated National Endowment for the Humanities grant applications in technology. Currently the English Department Chair at Connersville High School in Indiana, Ms. Beard has converted all English/Language Arts classrooms at her school to computer classrooms and regularly leads in-service sessions on using technology effectively.

Cancellation Policy
Requests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to Ileen Matthews at ileen@edtechteacher.org. If you have to cancel, we will issue a refund (minus a $25 processing fee) until 21 days before your workshop. After that date, no refunds will be given.

If the workshop is full, we'll put you on the waiting list, and let you know if a spot becomes available.
Professional Development Credits
We have received approval from Framingham State University (Massachusetts) to award 1 (one) graduate credit to participants at a cost of $75. To receive graduate credit participants must be in attendance for all onsite instruction and complete all assigned work. Once registered, participants will receive additional graduate credit details.
We can also award PDPs (Massachusetts) for attendance.
Directions & Travel
The workshops will be held in classrooms leased from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, MA - minutes from downtown Boston and near Logan Airport. You can reach the workshops by car or public transportation. It is a short walk from the Harvard Square T Stop (the subway), as well as along bus routes. The MBTA website has schedules and details.
If you have not experienced driving in Boston, know that it can be quite a challenge. Parking is limited and expensive - plan on approximately $27 per day in parking around Harvard.
