Primary Sources 2.0, June 25-26, 2012

Primary sources -- the heart of historical analysis -- are increasingly available on the Web and will become predominantly digital in the future. Furthermore, as conventional, print-based text gives way to screen-based "multimodal" communication, the historian of the 21st Century will be as likely to encounter multimedia primary sources as print-based ones. As such, historians, educators, and students must improve their skills of accessing, evaluating, and collaborating with digital primary sources in networked environments.

The Flipped Classroom, July 19-20, 2012

In the “flipped classroom,” teachers use technology to reorganize classroom time so students maximize the value of time in class with their teachers and peers. Class time, in many typical classrooms, is spent delivering content, and then students go home and do individual processing work for homework. For example, a math teacher gives a lecture on a concept in class, and then students go home and solve problems. An English teacher explains a grammar rule, students go home and do writing exercises applying the rule.

Dynamic Teaching with Interactive Whiteboards, July 23-25, 2012

A SMART Board and ActivBoard are both examples of an Interactive Whiteboard (IWB), a 21st Century tool that can transform the classroom and nurture essential skills. Major benefits of an interactive whiteboard include its versatility, interactivity, multimedia/multimodal presentation, and participation potential. Interactive Whiteboards can also help students better conceptualize new knowledge through representations of abstract ideas. Furthermore, IWB lessons and activities can be recorded and published in ways that facilitate sharing and collaboration. In all, IWBs are a classroom tool that can help teachers create engaging, interactive, collaborative, and visual lessons and activities that motivate students to learn.

Creating Digital Course Content: iPads & ePubs, July 26-27, 2012

With iPads increasingly becoming the device of choice for 1:1 programs, especially in light of Apples recent launch of iBooks2, iBook Author, and the improved iTunesU, school districts and classroom teachers no longer have to rely on expensive and often outdated paper based textbooks to provide course content to their students. Educators now have the ability to create their own, custom content that can be published as an eBook and distributed to students online and then directly to the iPad.

From Our Participants

This was a fantastic workshop. Tom and Justin are so knowledgeable and were so patient and helpful to the participants.
– Joseph Fioravanti, La Salle Academy, RI

This is what professional development should be all about. There are soooooo many things to take away from this that I can actually use in my classroom, almost right away. Great suggestions, great examples. I would absolutely recommend this, and almost want to force my colleagues to take this.
– Dan Boyle, Triton Regional High School, MA

The most hands-on, practical, and cutting-edge workshop I have ever attended.
– Carlo Palusci, Zurich International School, Switzerland
