Teaching English & History with Technology (June 13-14, 2013)

This intensive two-day workshop will offer hands-on opportunities for History and English and Language Arts educators to explore practical ways to use technology to enrich the study of their respective curricula. The workshop will explore innovative ideas, effective techniques, and thoughtful plans for incorporating web-based resources, web-based creativity tools, and emerging technologies into the classroom. Participants will examine numerous examples of classrooms and projects that effectively integrate technology, work with innovative tools to help improve student reading, writing and research, develop skills with Web 2.0 tools and apps, and learn strategies to build creative, collaborative, and community minded classrooms of the 21st Century.

Key concepts to be addressed include:

  • The Future of Research - Teaching and using effective search strategies, the assessment of website credibility, and the documentation of online sources. Advanced web-based research through directories and advanced searching strategies and searching platforms.
  • Interacting with Digital Text - Finding and using multimodal texts, leveraging audio books, and reading as well as creating digital text.
  • Digital Writing and Storytelling - Blogging, collaborative writing, digital portfolios, and multimedia presentations as alternatives to traditional writing assessments. Through a combination of resources explored and hands-on time, participants will leave the workshop with the skills and strategies to begin integrating technology into their projects, activities and classroom.

The projects, concepts, and tools addressed in this workshop not only apply to The Common Core State Standards, but also to the 4Cs - Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, & Creativity - as defined by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

Required Equipment

EdTechTeacher does not provide equipment for the workshop. Participants should bring a laptop computer with wireless capability. You are welcome to also bring iPads, tablets, or other mobile devices in addition to your laptop, but some tools may not work on all devices.

Schedule

We will begin promptly at 8:30 am, and strongly recommend arriving 20-30 minutes early on the first day in order to get set up. Coffee and snacks will be available each morning. Lunch will be also be provided.

  • 8:30 am - 12:00 pm - Class
  • 12:00 pm - 1:00pm - Lunch
  • 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm - Class

Instructor

Shawn McCusker
Shawn McCusker
has 18 years of experience as a middle school and high school teacher. He has taught in public, private and alternative schools. In 2006, he was recognized as a finalist for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. He earned his B.A. in history from Northern Illinois University and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, Chicago. On Twitter, Shawn is the co-leader of #sschat, an online social studies community, and the creator of #1to1techat, which conducts discussions of effective leadership and teaching practices for 1:1 programs. He is also an organizer of both EdCampChicago and EdCampSocialStudies. He has presented at national and local conferences such as the National Council for Social Studies, and the ILCHE/IMSA Conference. Shawn is currently an American Studies and World History teacher at William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois where he teaches in a 1:1 iPad pilot.

Cancellation Policy

Requests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to Ileen Matthews at ileen@edtechteacher.org. If you have to cancel, we will issue a refund (minus a $25 processing fee) until 21 days before your workshop. After that date, no refunds will be given.

Waiting List Policy

If the workshop is full, we'll put you on the waiting list, and let you know if a spot becomes available.

Professional Development Credits

Through the Georgia Department of Education, 1 Professional Learning Unit (PLU) can be awarded for completion of this workshop.

Travel and Logistics

The workshops will be held on the Woodward Academy Middle School Campus, 1662 Rugby Avenue, College Park, GA 30337 - minutes from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

Driving Directions

From I-85 coming South, take the Virginia Avenue exit (exit 73). Go right and proceed approximately 7/10 of a mile to Lee Street in College Park (you will go past a Lee Street just after you get off I-85, but this one is in East Point). Turn right (onto Lee Street). Go to the third street (Rugby Avenue) and turn right. The campus will be straight ahead.

There are numerous hotel options near Woodward Academy and the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. The options below include an airport shuttle and are within walking distance of Woodward Academy.

Country Inn & Suites
Located approximately .5 miles from Woodward, the Country Inn & Suites offers an airport shuttle service as well as rooms for approximately $89 per night.

Fairfield Inn & Suites
Rooms run approximately $89 per night. The hotel offers free WifI and airport shuttle. It is located approximately 1 mile from Woodward. 

Hilton Garden Inn
The Hilton Garden Inn has complimentary WiFi and airport shuttle, as well as room rates of approximately $95 per night. It is located approximately 1 mile from Woodward.
