Teaching History with Technology (June 20-21, 2013)
The Teaching History With Technology Workshop is an intensive, two-day, hands-on opportunity for history and social studies educators to explore practical ways to use technology to enrich their curricula and engage students. The workshop explores innovative ideas, effective techniques, and ready-made plans for incorporating Web-based resources and emerging technologies into the classroom instruction of history.
The workshop provides numerous examples of the best history-related web sites, describes practical methods and techniques for using technology in the history and social studies classroom, and includes opportunities for targeted web exploration after each "mini" lesson. Examples highlight both inquiry-based and research-oriented technology applications in World History, World Cultures, United States History, and Civics for middle school, high school, and college. The workshop emphasizes innovative ideas and exciting projects for incorporating Web 2.0 tools including blogs, podcasts, digital storytelling, screencasting, Google Docs, social networks, and other emerging technologies into the classroom. The combination of resources and hands-on time to explore and create will leave the workshop participants with a set of strategies and resources to begin integrating technology into the classroom.
The projects, concepts, and tools addressed in this workshop not only apply to The Common Core State Standards, but also to the 4Cs - Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, & Creativity - as defined by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
Required Equipment
EdTechTeacher does not provide equipment for the workshop. Participants should bring a laptop computer with wireless capability. You are welcome to also bring iPads, tablets, or other mobile devices in addition to your laptop, but some tools may not work on all devices.
Schedule
We will begin promptly at 8:30 am, and strongly recommend arriving 20-30 minutes early on the first day in order to get set up. Coffee and snacks will be available each morning. There are lunch options within walking distance of the University.

Instructor
Shawn McCusker has 18 years of experience as a middle school and high school teacher. He has taught in public, private and alternative schools. In 2006, he was recognized as a finalist for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. He earned his B.A. in history from Northern Illinois University and an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, Chicago. On Twitter, Shawn is the co-leader of #sschat, an online social studies community, and the creator of #1to1techat, which conducts discussions of effective leadership and teaching practices for 1:1 programs. He is also an organizer of both EdCampChicago and EdCampSocialStudies. He has presented at national and local conferences such as the National Council for Social Studies, and the ILCHE/IMSA Conference. Shawn is currently an American Studies and World History teacher at William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois where he teaches in a 1:1 iPad pilot.

Cancellation Policy
Requests for cancellation must be submitted in writing to Ileen Matthews at ileen@edtechteacher.org. If you have to cancel, we will issue a refund (minus a $25 processing fee) until 21 days before your workshop. After that date, no refunds will be given.

If the workshop is full, we'll put you on the waiting list, and let you know if a spot becomes available.
Professional Development Credits
We are exploring options to be able to give professional development credits and/or grad credit for this workshop.
Travel and Logistics
The workshops will be held at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law located at 25 E Pearson St Chicago, IL 60611 on the Water Tower Campus. The building is conveniently located near historic Michigan Avenue in downtown, and is accessible by public transportation. Parking is also available nearby.

There are numerous hotel options near the School of Law including Baumhart Lodging at the University. Located two blocks west of the historical Water Tower and Magnificent Mile, Baumhart Hall is a high-rise deluxe apartment-style residence hall in the heart of Chicago.
