iPad Resources and Suggestions from EdTechTeacher (10/2-10/8)

Many schools have struggled with Apple’s latest update to iOS6. While there are certainly a lot of glitches, there are also some great new benefits. Here are a few lessons-learned and discoveries from the past few weeks.

  1. WiFi Settings Moved – just in case you’ve been looking for it, instead of being under General, it’s now in the left menu inside settings just below the Airplane Mode switch.
  2. Some Location Services Options are now under Privacy – apps that access the Photo Roll now ask for authorization. However, if you decline, then some other apps don’t work as well. For example, some teachers in a workshop could not save their DoodleCast Kids screen casts to the camera roll. Turns out that we had to go into Settings>Privacy>Photos and then turn on access.
  3. Speak Selection now highlights – This is a great new feature! Go into Settings>General>Accessibility>Speak Selection and turn on highlighting. Then, when reading the text, the words will also be high lighted.
  4. The iMovie Trailer Update now lets you insert photos – with the latest iMovie update, it’s now possible to include still photos in trailers and use the Ken Burns effect. This is a fantastic addition and makes the app work more like the Mac program.
