Weekly Resources & ISTE Recap

Happy 4th of July! Given the soggy conditions here in the North East, we decided to post our weekly resources a bit early. This week, Greg Kulowiec kicked off another Full Year Professional Development Program in Waltham, MA. Shawn McCusker led another successful Advanced iPad Classroom workshop in Cambridge (there are two more scheduled for Austin and Berkeley), and our team of Tom Daccord, Holly Clark, and Douglas Kiang delivered incredible sessions at ISTE.

ISTE Recap from the EdTechTeacher Team

If you were unable to see Tom Daccord, Douglas Kiang, or Holly Clark at ISTE, never fear! We have highlights from their sessions, AND they will all be presenting later this month at the July 29-30 EdTechTeacher Summit!

5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make with iPads with Tom Daccord

“Tablets, including iPads, are all the rage in today’s classrooms. But how many iPad initiatives fail due to common mistakes that could be avoided with proper planning?

During a jam-packed ISTE 2014 session, EdTechTeacher director and co-founder Tom Daccord gave an overview of what he said are five common mistakes schools across the country seem to make when it comes to iPad implementations.”

Read more about Tom’s session in this eSchoolNews article from Managing Editor, Laura Devaney (@eSN_Laura), and view his slides below.

Double Sessions from Douglas Kiang

Douglas presented two topics – Gamification, Makerspaces, and Minecraft: The Classroom of the Future is Now! and From Angry Birds to Minecraft: What Do Games Teach Us About Learning?. Laura Devaney from eSchoolNews wrote an excellent article about his first session and captured this great quote:

[In classrooms of the future,] “Our role as teachers…is to facilitate student collaboration, to allow them to show us that they’re good at,” and encourage students to bring their skills together to create a community of learning and exploration.”

View Doug’s slides and don’t miss the chance to hear him later this month!

Remix the Portfolio – Holly Clark’s IGNITE Session

In her 5-minute IGNITE session, Holly issued a powerful call-to-action: Today’s students should be empowered to create their own digital footprint. Watch her talk and don’t miss the chance to hear her elaborate on this concept at the ETT Summit.
