2009 Create Great Lessons with Google Earth, Maps, & Docs Workshop Boston, Massachusetts
Description
Learn Google’s “free” online tools from an award-winning Google Certified Teacher. Create lessons for your students or have them construct projects. Google Earth, Maps, and Docs can be used independently or together to create lessons that engage students and combine curricula with WEB 2.0 technology and teaching with the Internet. No matter what you teach, there’s something for everyone. Google Earth is a treasure chest of resources and information. “Fly” any place on Earth; use satellite imagery. NASA, National Geographic, Discovery, the USGS, and others bring information to your desktop. Google Maps allows users to create interactive maps and add video, images, and text. Create lessons, or have students demonstrate what they have learned. Use Map Gadgets to “harvest” geographical, scientific, and political information from the WEB. Google Docs allows for online collaboration in real time. Use with colleagues for virtual meetings, or have students collaborate on projects - from any computer, at any time!
Special Feature: Post your students’ projects to “Google Historical Voyages and Events” - a site dedicated to explorers, voyages, events, and historical backgrounds of countries throughout the World.
Among the Google Tools we will showcase:
Google Earth: tilt and rotate the globe for different views; create virtual tours for students; use 3D imagery, use the timeline feature to trace how cities have changed; explore the ocean as you fly underwater and view the deep sea. Travel on the Mars Rover and explore the red planet.
Google Maps: Google provides dynamic, interactive maps that are draggable. Choose between "map view" and "satellite view," which uses satellite imagery. Create your own maps with placemarkers, paths, pop up windows, images, and links. Maps can be embedded on WEB pages and blogs.
Map Gadgets: are great little tools that bring information to your desktop.
Google Docs: It’s a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation tool similar to Power Point, and a tool for online surveys and quizzes. Create and store documents online, or upload documents from your hard drive. See revision histories, determine who contributed (what and when) with time stamps. Make connections with your students.
iGoogle: design your own Google startpage; add gadgets and tabs; edit settings; add themes; share with colleagues or students
Google News: customize a news page, view news from 4,500 sources, search the archives, customize a News page, get local news, and more
Google Book Search: find books by title or phrases; locate entire books to download and use; find books located in libraries or schools near you, and more
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop (or tablet) with wireless connectivity.
Each participant receives a copy of Best Ideas for Teaching with Technology, A Practical Guide for Teachers, by Teachers co-authored by Tom Daccord and Justin Reich.
